Small Business Owner Spotlight: Scientific Calibration Increases Productivity By Embracing Telematics Technology

Scientific Calibration Inc., a small business is a North Carolina-based pharmaceutical and research equipment company that focuses on the repair and calibration of electronic and multi-channel equipment along with lab systems.

With about 45 employees, Scientific Calibration deals with the service and sales of medical research equipment both within the US and outside.

We had the opportunity to talk to Cody White, Owner of Scientific Calibration, Inc.

What does your typical day look like?

Being a small business owner, I wear many hats. I start my day off by sorting through my emails. After that, I walk around and talk to all my employees. This is an important part of my day because I want all my employees to know that they are important and I can’t do it without them. I also meet with a lot of customers, and then devote the rest of my day to help out and take on whatever tasks the day calls for.

What is the top priority for your company?

Our priority is offering top quality products and services to our customers. Superior quality of service translates to happier customers and that is very important to us

Can you tell us about your mobile workforce?

We currently have 10 company vehicles, and we’re in the process of acquiring 5 more. Our employees go out to different pharmaceutical companies and service the customers’ equipment. The company’s vehicles are used for tasks where employees have to take their metrology devices out to calibrate and repair medical research equipment.

What is the biggest challenge you face with your mobile workforce? 

Our biggest challenge has been the lack of visibility of the vehicles and the employees when they are out at a job site. We have also had difficulty getting accurate mileage numbers for each vehicle, which is important for billing purposes.

What technologies do you use at Scientific Calibration?

Before Automile, we weren’t always aware of what was going on at the job site. We can also view the trip details from the past, which has been a phenomenal advantage. And it is convenient to be able to track all the vehicles even when I am traveling.

What is your ROI with Automile?   

  • Employee productivity has gone up since we started using Automile. With the tracking feature, we make sure that the employees are on time for jobs.
  • Safety is another advantage we have noticed. We get notifications if there is a speeding issue with any of our vehicles.
  • Accurate billing for customers is now more achievable due to the mileage tracking. We can bill customers based on the exact distance our vehicles have driven.

In my 20 years of working here, we’ve had many instances where vehicles have disappeared for days before showing up at the company location again. So in a way, Automile has been a great insurance policy as well. I get peace of mind from knowing exactly where our vehicles are at any given point. This is the biggest ROI for me, and it’s been worth every penny.

What are your current Marketing strategies? 

Our main marketing has always been through word-of-mouth, which is directly tied to the quality of the service we provide.

What advice do you have for other small business owners? 

I’m a firm believer in the fact that you are only as strong as your employees. Your team around you is who you are. If you don’t treat them like family, like humans, your business will fail. If the company makes a dollar, I share it. I make sure that everyone is winning and everybody gets a piece of the pie. My company has an excellent employee retention rate- I have employees who have stayed with the company for over 16 years now. I also believe in managing by example. I manage my duties as the owner of the company, but I can also jump on a forklift and handle that aspect of the job too. No job is too big or too small, and when you work that way you earn a lot of respect from your employees.
